Surgery FAQs

Where will the surgery be performed?

The surgery will be performed at the Specialty Surgical Center.
That address is 9001 Wilshire Blvd, Suite #100, Beverly Hills, CA 90211
Phone: 310-275-2339

When will I know my surgery time?

You will be contacted 1 day prior to your scheduled surgery date to confirm your exact surgery time. Please plan to be at the surgery center for 3 hours.

Do I need to prepare anything for the day of my surgery?

Do not eat or drink anything 8 hours prior to your scheduled arrival time – if anything is eaten or drank within that time frame, the surgery center will cancel your surgery. If you are required to take medications in the morning, it is acceptable to take a SMALL SIP of water with your medications.

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing as you will not be changing into a gown. Avoid any jewelry, make-up, perfume, or cologne.

Please bring all your eye drops and medications to your surgery

What are my restrictions following surgery?

For the first day, we ask patients to relax and to avoid any strenuous physical activities. It is okay to use your eyes as it will not delay the healing process.

For the first week following surgery we advise the patient against any bending over, heavy lifting and exercise, rapid shaking/movement of your head, swimming, jacuzzi, saunas, eye make-up, and rubbing the eyes. You can shower and bathe
but we advise against any direct water pressure and any soap or shampoo into the surgical eye.

There are no restrictions to your diet, sleeping regimen, or using the eyes. It is normal for your vision to be blurred after surgery as it takes time for the vision to settle in.

You may travel following cataract surgery as long as it does not conflict with your post-operative appointments.

Can I take an Uber/Lyft/Taxi?

Patients must have someone they know picking them up or use Transport Seniors LA. If you have a ride already set, the surgery center will contact your ride when you are ready for discharge.

Where is my post-operative appointment after surgery?

The 1 day post-operative appointment will be at our Century City office.

Address: 2080 Century Park East, Suite 911,
Los Angeles, CA 90067
Phone: 310-229-1220

What do I do with the eye drops I have for surgery?

You will be instructed to start a lid hygiene regimen with Optase Lid Wipes, 1 week prior to surgery, to help cleanse the area around the eyes in preparation for surgery.

You will be prescribed medications for your cataract surgery that you will start 2 to 7 days prior to your surgery date. The medication may be a combination drop known as Omni or 3 separate drops (an antibiotic, a topical steroid, and an NSAID).
Please bring your medications with you to surgery and to all follow-up visits.

What is a covered service?

Your insurance will cover the surgical center fees, the anesthesiologist, and the basic surgeon fee for your doctor. There may be additional costs related to your insurance coverage such as your deductible or copay that is due at the time of surgery with the Specialty Surgical Center.

What are non-covered services?

Your surgeon may have discussed astigmatism correction and advanced lens options with you. Depending on your visual goals, you may be a candidate for one of these options. These options are not covered by your insurance and are considered non-covered services and require out-of-pocket payments.

What do I need for my Health and Physical Clearance for surgery?

A Health and Physical must be completed with your Primary Care Physician within 30 days of your surgery date. A form will be faxed to your doctor to fill out to completion. If they have not received the form or you would like to bring a hard copy with you, the form is available on our website under “Surgery Forms.”

I have Diabetes. Do I need to stop or change my medications?

If you are diabetic and taking insulin, please confirm with your doctor how they would like you to take your medications in preparation for surgery.

If you are diabetic and taking oral medications, please do not take your oral medication the morning of your surgery.

Please be advised, that if you are on the following medications, per the Surgery Center’s protocol, they must be stopped for 1 week prior to your surgery date.

Ozempic, Trulicity, Mounjaro, Wegovy, Semaglutide or any form of a Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Agonist

I have High Blood Pressure. Do I need to stop or change my medications?

If you are taking Coumadin, your doctor will order an INR level. Based on those results, we may make adjustments to your dosage in preparation for surgery.

You do not need to stop any blood pressure, anti-coagulants, or aspirin before routine cataract surgery. For complex cases, we may need to make adjustments to these medications – if this is an issue, please discuss this with your Primary Care Physician.
